Harvard Alumni for Climate and the Environment (HACE) Book Club

The Book Club brings together alumni across fields and with diverse skill sets to read fiction and non-fiction books on climate and the environment. Topics have ranged from extinctions to extraction, to why it is so hard to wrap our minds around the real impacts of changing climate. The Book Club starts its 5th year in July 2026. Books that we have read previously are listed below.

If you are interested in meeting other alumni to educate, inspire, and chart a path toward actionβ€”or simply to become more climate literateβ€”this is the place for you!

UPCOMING EVENTS

New York 2140 by Kim Stanley Robinson

Saturday September 12 from 11am to 12 noon ET (US & Canada)

After an August holiday, join us to discuss a post-disaster fairy tale. Sea levels have risen fifty feet and lower Manhattan is a half-drowned "Super Venice," with skyscrapers wading in canals where streets used to be. Through the interlocking story of one co-op's motley residents β€” hackers, the building superintendent, a police inspector, a finance bro, two orphaned teens hunting sunken treasure β€” Robinson asks how "the city that never sleeps" adapts to everyday life after climate catastrophe. The book is an epic, stubbornly hopeful argument that fighting climate collapse and fighting unchecked capitalism are the same fight. Some say this novel takes a visionary approach to climate collapse. Kirkus Reviews calls it β€œa thoroughly enjoyable exercise in world-building.”
