Volunteer Spotlight: Melanie Long, AB ‘10

Melanie Long is based in Atlanta, Georgia, and works as the Strategic Communications Manager for the Sustainability Solutions Lab at UMass Boston. She graduated from Harvard College in 2010 with an AB in English and a secondary in Film Studies. Prior to starting her role at UMass Boston, she worked in the Creative Services department for Harvard’s Alumni Affairs and Development Office.

Growing up, Melanie’s family moved every two to three years, and she saw firsthand the inequity of the impacts of climate change in Venezuela, Germany, and urban and suburban neighborhoods in the United States. She initially viewed these differences from a social justice lens but, over time, has learned about the intersection of racial and environmental justice, and is passionate about supporting efforts that can help provide solutions that support all communities equally.

Melanie is the Newsletter Lead as well as a member of the growing Environmental Justice Committee. She is excited to be a part of the HACE team because of the vibrant community of Harvard alumni, students, and affiliates who want to use their collective expertise to take meaningful action against the universal threat of climate change.
