<image:title>News - Volunteer Spotlight: Valerie Nelson, AB ‘69 - Valerie is an environmental activist and policy analyst, and she has worked at both the local and national levels. Her primary engagement has been in the water sector, as she is the founder and director of the Water Alliance. She became especially passionate about environmental activism after living in Gloucester, which is an historic fishing port; her community is experiencing both mounting threats and inadequate responses within the overall structures of federal and state governance, but her insights into intricate systems at conferences and in research projects has reified her standing in wider national circles and has affected change in causes she cares about. Valerie has become an active volunteer within HACE by organizing Harvard’s Climate Conversations program, which is sponsored by the HAA. The final session is on January 13th, and the conversations have touched on climate change, biodiversity, planetary health, and social justice. Valerie was particularly motivated to do something at her 50th reunion in 2019, as many of her peers were concerned about the effects of climate change on their children and grandchildren. She reflected on the history of protests within her class during their undergraduate years, and many within her generation still want to make a difference. Valerie sees HACE’s potential in its ability to serve as a place for alumni of all generations and backgrounds to learn more about climate science, as well as emerging technologies and solutions in mitigation and adaptation. She wants the community to bring together citizens, professionals, government officials, investors, and other stakeholders to achieve high impact and equity in climate solutions. Valerie would like to encourage everyone to think about getting involved in local campaigns and causes in the places we all live, so that we can have a positive impact on our own communities as well as bring those lessons and skills back to the wider Harvard community to act and affect change together. Valerie Nelson was born in Norwood, MA and has spent most of her life between MA and Washington D.C. for policy and advocacy work. She graduated from Harvard College in 1969, from London School of Economics with a M.Sc in 1971, and from Yale with a PhD in Economics in 1977, and she also taught public policy courses at HKS and MIT in the 1970s. She is currently based in Gloucester, MA.</image:title>

<image:title>News - Volunteer Spotlight: Naz Beykan GSD ‘13</image:title>
<image:caption>Naz Beykan returned to her hometown of Istanbul after graduating from the Graduate School of Design in 2013 with a Master’s Degree in Design Studies: Energy and Environments. Since then, she has been working as an individual consultant on areas ranging from climate resilience to green buildings with organizations such as the World Bank Group and UNDP. As a child, Naz had an intense attachment to animals and was fascinated by the nature she witnessed on the walks her parents took her on through the woods. At the age of 3 she decided to become a zoologist, but as a young adult she realized she was more of an urban dweller and thereby found herself in architecture school focusing on sustainable design. On her first day of orientation at the GSD, Naz watched Richard T.T. Forman take the stage to talk about landscape ecology with a passion so contagious that in that moment she felt the same excitement she felt as a young girl strolling through the woods suddenly reemerge. Naz has dedicated her career to working on projects which address climate change and promote climate action. She is part of the Climate Research Association, an NGO based in Turkey, and in her personal life she chooses to not own a car, eat a plant-based diet, invest in energy and water efficiency measures in her own home, and try her best to be a conscientious consumer. “I believe Harvard is uniquely positioned to address the climate crisis, and HACE is the necessary catalyst for action. Many alumni hold key roles across pivotal organizations in both the public and private sector, have a high level of technical expertise and knowledge, and maintain vast global networks of influential individuals and institutions. Together, we can trigger meaningful change. Specifically, I would like to position HACE as an incubator for collaboration across disciplines and institutions in order to raise awareness, boost action, and generate impactful projects with a global reach. I hope everyone will help make this a reality so we can ensure a healthy and inhabitable planet for all.”</image:caption>

<image:title>News - Volunteer Spotlight: Alaisha Sharma, AB ‘20</image:title>
<image:caption>Alaisha is originally from Mountain View, CA and is currently based in Santa Cruz, CA. She graduated from the College in 2020 with an AB in Computer Science and a secondary in Energy & Environment and is currently working as a Forward Deployed Software Engineer at Palantir Technologies. She identifies as an Indian / South Asian American woman, avid dancer, computer scientist, and passionate environmentalist. Alaisha has been passionate about the natural world since her childhood. As a child, watched Animal Planet like it was the Disney channel. In one of her classes she was moved to tears when reading about the Hundred Heartbeats Club, which is a list of species with less than 100 members left on Earth. And when visiting family in India, she saw the overwhelming pollution choking not only the wildlife around her but also her fellow human beings. However, she is still optimistic and active about the change we will be able to make, especially by uniting people across policy and tech. In the future, Alaisha wants to rethink how we build smart, sustainable cities, with a focus on developing countries. She would like to help bridge the gap between biologists, engineers, and architects to promote more bio-inspired design. In terms of HACE, Alaisha would like to see the expansion of the Mentorship Program to become an active hub that people can use to give or receive mentorship to their individual capacity, attend office hours to get feedback from experts on a startup idea, and receive informal peer reviews through discussion and collaboration. Her one ask for the group is that members invest their time in HACE. She believes "energy is contagious and you really do get out of it what you put in." She believes, and we agree, that in our new normal of remote connections individual investments are even more important!</image:caption>
